Weather Balloons Employed to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Forced Closure of Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.

Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
